About
Enjoy a relaxing ride and experience the unique highlights of the Crescent City on the City and Cemetery Tour with New Orleans Native Tours. Our City and Cemetery Tour provides an insider’s perspective, with opportunities to walk around on your own and take in the rich history of New Orleans. You will visit historic neighborhoods, including the French Quarter, Treme, Faubourgs St. John and Marigny, Garden and Warehouse Districts. You will also visit New Orleans’ historic cemeteries, known as Cities of the Dead, and learn about the above ground burial system.
Additional Info
The afternoon tour begins at 3pm daily making it easy to enjoy one of our city’s great restaurants before the tour. The tour ends around 5:30pm allowing plenty of time to freshen up prior to dinner or a night out on the town. We find two and a half hours is long enough to get a feel for our city, but not so long that customers get restless. Need help choosing a restaurant? During the tour, our guide will tell you about some of their favorite restaurants or feel free to ask for something different.
All of our New Orleans bus tours are in our new mini-busses, with comfortable seats, air conditioning, large windows to take in your surroundings, and small group sizes never more than 25 people.
Don’t worry about searching for the meeting point for the tour, the City and Cemetery Tour offers hotel pick up within the French Quarter and Business District. Many people take a City Tour within the French Quarter and never see the many eclectic neighborhoods that our tour covers.
Itinerary
The tour begins with a ride through the French Quarter pointing out destinations such as Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, Café Du Monde, the French Market, the Old U.S. Mint, and various historic statues along the way. Upon leaving the French Quarter you will take a drive down Frenchmen Street past jazz clubs like DBA, Spotted Cat, Maison, Snug Harbor, and many others where most of the local Jazz artists play.
Later drive through the neighborhood of Treme to see Congo Square, now named Louis Armstrong Park, the birthplace of Jazz. The tour then continues down the beautiful street Esplanade Avenue with varying architecture, like the Creole Cottage, Greek Revival, and Steamboat Gothic styles.
The tour will then take you inside of one of our cemeteries where your guide will tell you about our above ground burial system and give you time to look around on your own. With our tour you get a New Orleans City tour and a New Orleans Cemetery Tour all in one. These “cities of the dead” are in some cases restored and maintained by one of New Orleans’ great nonprofit organizations, Save Our Cemeteries.
At this point in the tour it is time for a break, so we will take you to Morning Call Café, where you can have some world famous beignets and chicory coffee. During this break feel free to stroll around The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden within City Park.
After your break, the tour will take you along Lake Pontchartrain where you can see the longest bridge in the world, the Causeway. The lake is where the flooding came from during Hurricane Katrina and we will show you the largest levee breach during Katrina. You will get an idea of how our city stays dry when viewing our levees, drainage canals, and pumping stations. The tour will take you through areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina before heading to the Garden District to see the mansions along St. Charles Avenue.
When driving down St. Charles Avenue learn about the streetcar, a national landmark started in 1835. This portion of the tour will pass by many of the multi-million dollar homes along St. Charles Avenue, as well as both Tulane and Loyola Universities. The Garden District used to have the most millionaires in the entire US and still houses many of the old affluent families and celebrities within the city.
The tail end of the tour will take you past many statues and museums, such as the National World War II Museum, the statue of General Robert E. Lee, and Benjamin Franklin.
Your tour guide will drop you off at your hotel and will be glad to answer any questions you might have regarding the tour or even restaurants, bars, or events in the city. There are many tours in New Orleans, but none cover the many neighborhoods and topics like our City and Cemetery Tour.
