About
In addition to our Haleakala Downhill bike tour, we also offer a bike rental option in which you can come to our shop in Paia and rent mountain bikes for a self-guided tour of Maui’s Haleakala volcano. With this option, you can rent all the equipment that we normally use in the biking tours (mountain bike, helmet, rain/wind gear, backpack, map, bike lock and vehicle bike rack), and make your way to the top of Haleakala on your own.
However, using this option means you will need an extra person to drive you to the summit of Haleakala and drive the car back down while you bike to sea level. This option will not work for bikers or biking groups that do not have an extra person that only does the driving.
Often, people ask: “How do I get my car back from the summit?” “Is there a bus that goes up the mountain?” “Should I rent two cars and leave one at the bottom?” “How about using a taxi or even hitchhiking?”
None of these options will work or are very practical for this Maui bike ride. Using a taxi or two cars is very expensive. There are no buses that travel on the biking route, and hitchhiking is very dangerous and highly impractical.
If you do have an extra driver and want to rent a mountain bike for traveling Haleakala, we offer bike rentals in Maui based on availability. We are primarily a bike tour company, so we give priority to our self paced tours. For this reason, we do not take reservations on rentals. To ensure you have a bike rental for that day, call our shop the afternoon before you want to rent the bike. At that time, we will know our schedule for the next day and will be able to tell you if we have bikes available to rent, or if not, we can direct you to another bike rental company.
Our bike rentals are for 24 hours. Thus, if you would like a bike for sunrise, you can rent the bike in the morning of the day before you want to see the sunrise and keep it overnight. Just return the bike by noon the following day after the sunrise. We don’t offer rentals at 3:00 a.m. If you would like the bike for the same day, we offer rentals at 9:00 a.m., which gives you more time to complete the ride and a chance of better weather, along with the opportunity to listen to the safety briefing given to other bike tour guests. Just return the bike by 4:00 p.m. the same day.
*The vehicle bike rack will fit 3-4 bikes. Please call or email to confirm your car rental and our bike rack availability. No roadside assistance is provided with the bike rental.
