Capt. Rex Sailing Adventures
The schooner “Nathaniel Bowditch” is a steel hulled vessel; designed by Merrit Walter and originally launched as the “Blackbeard” in 1992. Captain Rex Walley purchased this vessel, in February of 1997.
At that time he hauled down the “Jolly Roger” and renamed the vessel “Nathaniel Bowditch”, to honor the “father of scientific navigation” who had lived from 1773 to 1838. Since that time, Captain Rex has enjoyed the company of over 70,000 passengers over many voyages at sea.
The “Bowditch” is 54’ feet in length and weighs in at 20 tons, carrying 1,050 sq. ft. of sail.
On one occasion, she attained a sailing speed of 10.4 knots. For her style she is a fine sailer, with a soft, dry ride in an active sea.
She is a tough boat, and once faced winds of over 80mph under full sail in a summer storm.
Privately chartering the Nathaniel Bowditch is a unique, exciting, and affordable way to entertain friends, celebrate a special occasion, stage a corporate outing, or just spoil yourself.
Not only are you sailing through the sunset, but you will probably have the opportunity to encounter some of Destin’s dolphins who often come visit us as we sail.
